The North Carolina Junior Closed Tennis Tournaments are being held at Chapel Hill. In the 21s and under, Gaden Corpening of Tryon had to play a qualifying round which he won 7-6, 6-0 and then he knocked off No. 4 seed Bob Allbrook 6-3, 7-5 Tuesday. Wednesday he won his quarter- finals match by beating Bobby Vaughn 6-2, 7-6 and was scheduled to play his semi-final match today. The Democrats cheered Sen. Edward M. Kennedy Tuesday night as he won endorsement of his $12 billion job creation program. Principal Alan Peoples is a promoter of Stearns School in Columbus and for education in general. One of his teachers drew a picture of Stearns School which is the front of a Polk County School Calendar for 1980-81. The little calendar also has a couple of sayings pertaining to the importance of education and then a footnote which states, Not printed at taxpayers expense. Mr Peoples believes that if you let the people in the community Continued On Back Page Saluda Class Of ’38 The Saluda High School Class of 1938 will hold its 42nd reunion Friday at the Saluda Truck Stop Restaurant. The social hour will begin at 6:30, followed by dinner at 7:30. Breaks Glass Door Someone broke the glass door of the Landrum Estate office near the Landrum Post Office Monday night or early Tuesday morning. Nothing was taken, but glass was scattered. Arts Council Elects Officers The Polk County Community Arts Council met on July 30 to elect officers and new board members. Mary Blackwell was elected President and Mary Shambaugh was elected Secre tary. The next meeting of the Arts Council will be held at 5 o'clock on August 20 in the Columbus Town Hall. All members and all prospective members are en couraged to attend. RED FOX BRIDGE There will be NO Tuesday bridge at Red Fox on Aug. 19th, but there will be Wednesday evening couples bridge on Aug. 20th at 6 p.m. For more information or reservation call Eleanor Weber 894-8858 or Viginia Jinkinson 894-3117. Town Of Landrum Buys Computer The Landrum City Council met Tuesday night at the City Hall. The Council negotiated a loan with the Farmers Home Admini stration for $1,250,000 to refi nance a water and sewer loan, which the town took out in 1974 for installation of the water and sewer system. The first reading was passed on a new business fee for telephone companies which was set at 1 percent on gross receipts within the city limits. The Council approved N. Paul Skelton, CPA for the annual audit. Council voted to buy the Radio Shack Computer at $8,661.12, paying one-third on delivery and balance by Nov. 1st. Councilman Calvin Whiteside reported the bad situation of people living outside the city limits using the dumpsters to put their garbage in. The Council instructed the police to prosecute those using the dumpsters who do not live inside the city limits. The Council approved requests for water bill adjustments. Due to complaints of excess noise and disturbance, the Council set a 10 p.m. curfew at Brookwood Park. All people must be out of the park by 10 p.m. or face prosecution. Mrs. Mentha Suber and Mrs. Lottie Barton have returned to their homes in Tryon after the Giles Family Reunion in Akron, Ohio. Film Tonight Two short films will be featured tonight at The Upstairs, 117 South Trade St., in Tryon. “Underground Film" is an expose of the world of “under ground” or experimental film- making which gives particular attention to Chick Strand and her work. Exerpts from other films help elucidate the growing art from cinema. The second film is “Walking”, a non-narrative observation from an artist’s viewpoint of the way people walk. The film uses a variety of techniques from line drawing to color wash. 40 Years Ago One side of the new highway between Tryon and the South Carolina line has been finished and concrete has been poured on the other side....Over 75 physicians attended the 20th annual Southern Pediatric Seminar at Saluda....Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell and Ralph Belamy in "His Girl Friday” playing at the Tryon Theatre.... Mrs. George Stahl, Miss Eliza- jeth Thackston and Miss Mildred Fite have returned from a visit to Myrtle Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Clifton McClure and daughters, Jenel and Tanya have returned to their home in Hamden, Conn, after a visit in Tryon with their grandparents Mrs. Annie McClure and B u’ Griffin, and other relatives ”'
